Responding to Howard Kurtz’ questions about her new book, Megyn Kelly said that TV hosts who supported Trump would collude with Donald beforehand to help give themselves credibility by making believe they were tough on him and called it “play acting.” On Fox News’ Media Buzz, Kurtz asked, “Certain TV hosts were in the tank for… Continue reading “Megyn Kelly: Pro-Trump TV hosts colluded to make Trump appear tough”

Why did no one ask Trump what made America great?
Of course, Jon Stewart makes his classic “both sides are bad” argument. It seems it hasn’t occurred to him that his good buddies may not be as candid around him as he believes:
Many logical and rational Americans understood what Trump’s Make America Great Again, a recycled Reagan slogan, truly meant. Naturally, the Fourth Estate, the media, NEVER pressed the orange-hued fan of tyrranical dictators for specifics, on anything. Let’s face it, Great is White in alt-Right, Trump’s America. Sadly, we knew we were fighting the battle against what… Continue reading “Why did no one ask Trump what made America great?”
Colbert got it wrong
Todd Gitlin (yes, “head of the SDS” Todd Gitlin on Stephen Colbert’s election night show:
What followed Colbert’s plea for unity was a string of jokes not worth repeating. Did he mean to show that the greatness of America is that everyone feels compelled to laugh at the same lame jokes? According to CBS, this closing monologue has been viewed more than 2 million times.
Honorable Stephen Colbert: We didn’t overdose on politics. Not enough of us took politics seriously. Not enough of us troubled to vote against a grotesque parody of populist politics laced with enough racism, nativism, sexism, bullshit and lies to choke a Constitutional convention. Not enough of us resisted the systematic rollback of voting rights that choked off the votes of people of color — restrictions mounted for the first time in 2016 in 14 states, including such swing states as Virginia and Wisconsin. As Ari Berman wrote in The Nation, as “27,000 votes currently separate[d] Trump and Clinton in Wisconsin
…300,000 registered voters, according to a federal court, lacked strict forms of voter ID…. On Election Day, there were 868 fewer polling places in states with a long history of voting discrimination, like Arizona, Texas and North Carolina.”These outrages against democracy did not draw the attention of major networks.
This anti-political doctrine greases the skids for despotism. While Colbert would have his devoted fans abandon politics until summoned again by a quivering trumpet, those who are not his fans — Republicans, not to put too fine a point on it — have arranged to take over the governments, the governorships and legislatures, in two-thirds of our states.
Two-thirds. With that control, they overthrow voting rights. With that control, they redistrict to force right-wing dominance of the House of Representatives.
To advise his hip fans to get over their retrograde interest in politics, to lighten up, to live as if hugging your adversary were the sole vitality of life, as if citizenly life were nothing more than a clogging of mental arteries — this is yahoo encouragement for the screaming me-me’s. This anti-political doctrine greases the skids for despotism. This disrespect for the common life, this indifference to truth, this counsel of surrender, Stephen Colbert, is how a republic dies.
Steve Bannon is just like Limbaugh!
Jeffrey Lord is still working for CNN. Yeah. This segment started with former Breitbart employee Kurt Bardella, who left the website last Spring over Trump. Bardella defined the problem with Breitbart.com: KURT BARDELLA: [Breitbart.com and Steve Bannon] represent a world view that is incredibly dangerous and divisive and to have this kind of proximity to the… Continue reading “Steve Bannon is just like Limbaugh!”
Jake Tapper grills Paul Ryan over hate crimes spawned by Trump win: ‘Americans are terrified’
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) on Sunday said that Donald Trump supporters who bully women and minorities were not welcome in the Republican Party. During an interview on CNN, host Jake Tapper pointed out to Ryan that there had been countless incidents of harassment against minorities and women since Donald Trump won the presidency. “There are… Continue reading “Jake Tapper grills Paul Ryan over hate crimes spawned by Trump win: ‘Americans are terrified’”

How the media and Trump embraced each other
Todd Gitlin calls out the media companies that made their deal with the Orange Devil:
The sheer idiocy of treating Donald Trump as if he were a normal political candidate who spoke in defensible sentences eventually became an embarrassment. What seems clear is that once Trump had nailed down the nomination, many honest and decent journalists in mainstream media sat themselves down for a needed soul-searching. For months they had dutifully trudged along applying to a huckster what the sociologist Gaye Tuchman once called the “strategic ritual” of objectivity, even as Trump had not cared a whit when caught out in falsehoods, delusions, and self-contradictions—and most alarmingly, his legions of followers did not seem to care either.
Someday, this journalistic turning point of late spring 2016 will repay extensive analysis. My first-draft judgment at the time was that the better quarters of journalism were jolted by journalistic remorse. We saw fine work from The Washington Post’s squadron of investigative reporters (said to number 25); by CNN’s Jake Tapper refusing to let Trump off the hook about the purportedly prejudicial “Mexicanness” of Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel; by a number of reporters at The New York Times, and the editors’ decision to run the word “lie” in a Trump headline (admittedly a news analysis, not a news piece, to use a Times distinction that means little or nothing to readers); the appearance of factual corrections in the crawls that ran at the bottom of the TV screen; the emergence, also at the Times, of locutions like “despite no evidence to support the claim.” There remained vast swathes of Trump background that never took off in the mainstream—for example, reporting on Trump’s history of friendly relations with organized crime, pioneered by Wayne Barrett and David Cay Johnston; but his tax dodges and misogyny did break through, especially when, in the latter case, there was a smoking video from Access Hollywood to attest to it.
By this time, of course, Trump had become the front man for the most vicious, racist, nativist, logic-starved, violence-inciting and otherwise deplorable and demagogic political campaign within memory.
BREAKING: The media/corporate complex strikes again
The imaginary email scandal seriously suppressed millennial turnout. The intent was never to help Trump win; he won’t. It was to suppress the down ballot wins. The damage has been done.
This afternoon, Comey said, “Oops, never mind.”
FBI’s Comey says new emails don’t change conclusions about Clinton https://t.co/BwOo3ELoF0 🔓

What do you suppose they’ll look like tomorrow?
Cashing in on the Clinton Cash scandal book
There’s another Clinton scandal book coming out in a few weeks, and the Villagers are all a-flutter. The New York Times gave it the star treatment today in a piece by lazy Times journalist Amy Chozick (she of the similarly spotty Hillary Clinton emails story). Now look. I don’t care what you think about Hillary Clinton,… Continue reading “Cashing in on the Clinton Cash scandal book”
RNC spox screams at Andrea Mitchell: ‘Everybody is rushing to her Defense!’
If you’re going to lie about things, I suppose the way to do it is by screaming lies at the person beside you to make them seem more plausible, right? At least, that’s the Sean Spicer technique. During an appearance with Andrea Mitchell today, Spicer lost his temper and started screaming lies about whose computer the… Continue reading “RNC spox screams at Andrea Mitchell: ‘Everybody is rushing to her Defense!’”
