  1. Chard is in a different plant family than kale, so it’s probably not the same substance in both you might be sensitive to. Chard has oxalic acid, which is irritant for lots of people (including me). Kale is in the cabbage family and has mustard oils. The chemically pure form of those is related to mustard gas, so, also irritant to some people even in tiny quantities.

    For people without sensitivities, those tiny quantities of irritants can actually be good, because they stimulate the digestive system to work better. In your case, where the system was already irritated, anything additional may be just that little bit too much.
