  1. There’s some discussion at FDL about the EO language extending coverage for “conscience exceptions” may mean reproductive health care may be severly limited. Also, there is question about what the Community Health Clinics can now offer.

    Jane Hamsher has several posts.

NOW “incensed” over language in EO

President Obama campaigned as a pro-choice president, but his actions today suggest that his commitment to reproductive health care is shaky at best. Contrary to language in the draft of the executive order and repeated assertions in the news, the Hyde Amendment is not settled law — it is an illegitimate tack-on to an annual must-pass appropriations bill. NOW has a longstanding objection to Hyde and, in fact, was looking forward to working with this president and Congress to bring an end to these restrictions. We see now that we have our work cut out for us far beyond what we ever anticipated. The message we have received today is that it is acceptable to negotiate health care on the backs of women, and we couldn’t disagree more.

WH released EO without showing it to Pro-Choice Caucus members

They are particularly concerned about the language in the statement from Dan Pfeiffer, which they believe suggests that the intent of the order is to go further than Hyde:

While the legislation as written maintains current law, the executive order provides additional safeguards to ensure that the status quo is upheld and enforced, and that the health care legislation’s restrictions against the public funding of abortions cannot be circumvented.

There are other posts over there as well.

  2. Chill out, ladies. Obama hasn’t thrown any body under the bus. He simply pimped Stupid Stupak! I mean, what the hell can Bart do now that the pres has his vote? Answer: nothing much. If the pres wants to renege on whatever deal was made, then so fucking what. He got what he needed from the asshole from Michigan, didn’t he?

  3. Yep. Bart got punked. Obiwan gave him a way to save face instead of getting crushed like a bug in November. Net effect = zero. But the Stupak brand is poisonous. He may have to look for a real job soon.
