  1. Charter schools: lots of opportunites for graft at the local level; dismantling of a whole level of local, democratic government (no more school boards); breaking up unions and thereby adding to the shrinking the middle-class; and reinforcing the ever-increasing resegregation of schools.

    Add to that high-stakes testing: lots of subsidizing the big corporations who publish the tests and all the teaching materials and texts needed to teach to the tests; and dumbing down a whole generation in the process. What’s not to like?

    I would bet anything that somewhere in some right-wing think tank there’s a smoking gun of a paper proposing all of this — privatizing the nice chunk of GDP that education represents and at the same time, creating an even stupider public. Why is it that everything they do is at least a two-for?
