ACORN Cleared

And the Democrats, of course, were quick to throw their longtime allies and effective poverty fighters under the bus because some right-wingers said “Boo!”:

When a duo of right-wing provocateurs posing as a pimp and prostitute released selectively-edited videos trying to impugn the community activist group ACORN, both Democrats and Republicans condemned the organization.

Congress then voted to cut off federal funding for the group (a decision that was later ruled unconstitutional). Following negative press and Congress’ vote, ACORN effectively disbanded Apr. 1 and reorganized under new names.

But a just-issued report by the Government Accountability Office that reviewed ACORN’s federal funding at the behest of Congress found little grist for the mill for politicians or right-wing bloggers looking to bash the now-defunct advocacy group for the poor.

The 38-page report surveyed over 31 federal agencies, probing how ACORN used federal funds and whether adequate controls on spending existed.

The report found no evidence of fraud, lax oversight or misuse of federal funds.

In fact, the report discovered that ACORN had adequately accounted for spending $40 million worth of major and minor grants awarded by the federal government to the group since 2005 to combat a variety of problems afflicting poor Americans, including lead poisoning, housing discrimination and lack of adequate job training.

  1. While there is no direct causal connection, I can sure argue that in his sophomoric (not to insult freshmen) search for bipartisanship with a gaggle of Republicans that has shown no inclination to play, the President enables and allows the extreme right nuts to flourish and flourish and flourish some more.

It just seems to me that by continuing to coddle the far right pols, he just empowers them and their nut constituents.

Witness Arizona: in a clear situation where the executive should have not only quickly challenged an unconstitutional law but taken to the bully pulpit and at least attempt to educate the public, the President early on ceded the ground to the brown community to voice united opposition. I know that it was unthinkable to elect that doddering old fool McCain (being 75 and in control of most of my marbles, I’m entitled) and his idiot running mate. But still.

I keep hoping that sometime and somewhere along the line, Dr. Dean will surface.

  2. “ACORN had adequately accounted for spending $40 million worth of major and minor grants awarded by the federal government to the group since 2005.”

Contrast this performance with that of Paul Bremer’s Coalition Provisional Authority, and you can easily see why ACORN needed to be dealt with, dealt with quickly, and dealt with harshly. Can’t have that adequate accounting stuff going on.

  3. Speaking of getting ACORN’ed

“I’m Jewish, if you can’t tell. And I’ve seen the video in which she made her so-called “indefensible” remarks. And I’ve just got to say it plain: there was no “there” there. She was being interviewed by a rabbi. She was friendly and smiling. She was asked “”Any comments on Israel”, and she said, “Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine.” This in itself is ambiguous, of course, since it could refer to all of Palestine previous to the arrival of any modern Jews, or it could refer to occupied Palestine (since the 1967 war). Either way, though, it’s simply a political opinion… In the land of fake journalism, she was one of the last authentic voices to be heard, and they just couldn’t wait for an excuse to get rid of her–particularly one that would make her look bad.

Helen Thomas had nothing to apologize for. I don’t agree with her. But neither do I feel offended. I understand where her feeling came from…As an American Jew, I am deeply ashamed that such a remarkable woman was shamed into retirement and exile in my name, that I was used in such a despicable and dishonest manner. I do not just with to defend Helen Thomas. I wish to apologize to her. As an American and as a Jew, I stand for much better than that.

  4. Paul, thank you so much for that! I’m so sick and tired of the ZIONIST line. I know many liberal Jews who would also agree with Helen. I even joined the ‘J’ street organization.

  5. Rahmie’s DINOS going, going, going, along with him, going, going back to BLOODYISRAEL!!! They are the flagrant knee-pad brigade to RAHMIE THE WARWHORE.

  6. “to combat a variety of problems afflicting poor Americans, including lead poisoning, housing discrimination and lack of adequate job training”
The real reason our Plutocrat owners instructed Congress to screw ACORN. All they were looking for was a reason. They couldn’t find one, so they trumped one up, delivered in a nice ribbon by their media.

  7. Rachel Maddow did a hit piece on the ACORN vs. BP hypocrisy. She let the Dems off too lightly – with a slap on the wrist while hitting the repugs hard. To me Dems are the problem.

But punching hippies and pandering to repugs is what passes for “changing the tone in D.C” these days. The Messiah embraced it and the Dems are only too happy to follow.

  8. Also have found Info clearing house which has lots of meaty articles not subject to censorship.
