Quote of the Day
Anne Laurie at Balloon Juice, commenting on all the “concern” about unemployed workers applying for Social Security disability:
So, let’s drop the mealy-mouthed charades for a minute and get blunt: “We”—the tiny percentage of people at the top of the American income pyramid and the millions of its enablers—are breaking people at an increased and ever-expanding rate. The backdoor programs cobbled together to keep these broken people out of public perception are being strained past the point where Very Serious Economists are comfortable. And therefore “we” need to… further cut back Social Security eligibility, “force” people to stay in the jobs they don’t have, presumably until everyone below boardroom level drops dead 20 minutes before shift-end, so they can be recycled expeditiously with the rest of the day’s garbage.
Since providing even the most minimal raggedy social safety net is un-American socialism, I guess it may come down to a choice between a good murderous pandemic influenza, like the 1918 version that tended to kill previously healthy young adults, or soylent green.
Epiphany
I was reading this post by BTD and had a sudden realization.
Here it is. Policy wonks measure results by abstract data that deals with marginal improvements on a large scale, and voters measure results by large improvements on a personal scale.
There’s an obvious problem there, don’t you think? What have Democrats done that has made your life better, right now?
This is what they don’t get, and this is why we keep talking past each other.
Happy Birthday
To Leonard Cohen AND Bill Murray!
Rats
Will Bunch is in the hospital and they just found he has two clogged heart arteries — complicated by another condition they have to get under control first.
So naturally he’s freaking out over his new book, which is rapidly dropping in the Amazon rankings because he’s not able to promote it. (He was in the top 100 last week and now he’s in the top 1000.)
If you’re interested in this great book, this would be a good time to buy it (it would be good to keep a blogger from having a heart attack, yes?) and if you already have it, it would be a good time to recommend it to all your friends.
Wow
The “clean coal” industry in action! Ayn Rand would be so proud:
Jennifer Hall-Massey knows not to drink the tap water in her home near Charleston, W.Va.
In fact, her entire family tries to avoid any contact with the water. Her youngest son has scabs on his arms, legs and chest where the bathwater — polluted with lead, nickel and other heavy metals — caused painful rashes. Many of his brother’s teeth were capped to replace enamel that was eaten away.
Neighbors apply special lotions after showering because their skin burns. Tests show that their tap water contains arsenic, barium, lead, manganese and other chemicals at concentrations federal regulators say could contribute to cancer and damage the kidneys and nervous system.
“How can we get digital cable and Internet in our homes, but not clean water?” said Mrs. Hall-Massey, a senior accountant at one of the state’s largest banks.
She and her husband, Charles, do not live in some remote corner of Appalachia. Charleston, the state capital, is less than 17 miles from her home.
“How is this still happening today?” she asked.
When Mrs. Hall-Massey and 264 neighbors sued nine nearby coal companies, accusing them of putting dangerous waste into local water supplies, their lawyer did not have to look far for evidence. As required by state law, some of the companies had disclosed in reports to regulators that they were pumping into the ground illegal concentrations of chemicals — the same pollutants that flowed from residents’ taps.
But state regulators never fined or punished those companies for breaking those pollution laws.
Of course not. That would be rude!

‘Rewards Don’t Work That Way’
Just fascinating. If only more business managers would watch this:
The Youth Vote
You know, it’s still a matter of conventional wisdom among the Democratic strategy elite that, since Obama won by pulling in a massive number of youthful voters (more than the 65+ voters for the first time), they have to cater to them — and testing in that age group shows that they don’t like partisanship, and they’re greatly in favor of compromise solutions. (Children of divorce who don’t like yelling?)
Apparently we raised an entire generation of political illiterates. My kids still don’t believe that Social Security is financially sound, because Ron Paul told them so!
So I think that’s what all this depressing, infuriating happy horseshit is about — Obama sucking up to the kids. I don’t think it’ll work, though, especially since their turnout is easily depressed by their current moods. Boomers and seniors are much more reliable voters.
Just sayin’!
Go, Lady Gaga
Although I haven’t mentioned it until now, I’m just tickled that Lady Gaga is so tirelessly rallying her many, many fans in support of DADT. Apparently she’s making the lives of Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins a veritable living hell!
I wish more celebrities used their status like this.
