The notion that aging has its bright side — the getting of wisdom — is an absurd falsehood that persists because it’s too depressing to acknowledge that there is no bright side to the gradual deterioration of mind and body.
From Raw Story:
Ensuring a long-term US military presence in Afghanistan beyond 2014 will be a key to success or failure in the war against Taliban insurgents, Republican Senator John McCain said Wednesday.
McCain, an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama’s planned withdrawal of most US troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, said a security accord with Kabul would have a transformative effect on the war.
“The strategic partnership would make clear to the Taliban that it cannot wait us out and win on the battlefield,” he said in speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a Washington think tank.
Ten years of pointless, budget-busting war is not enough for McCain. I can only guess his hawkish stubbornness has to do with the fact that he fought and became a POW during the Vietnam War years. The U.S. had to withdraw from that fiasco, but we’ll “win” this fiasco, goddamn it, even though it’s unclear who and what we’re fighting.
