Should women go to jail? “I never really thought about that.” I’ve been saying this all along: Once abortion opponents understand that you can’t have a different legal standard for women who have abortions, they will lose their taste for making it a crime.

Abortion was once illegal and so was birth control. People were arrested, tried and sent to prison. There is one thing you must understand about conservatives is that they wont stop with abortion and they wont stop with birth control. They will find something else they don’t like. Maybe stoning adulterers. Maybe stoning people that work on the Sabbath. I think the abortion war is over and the conservatives are winning. Its just a matter of time for final victory. Then their assault on birth control will begin.
It’s the same idea with prostitution and the drug trade: If you want to look tough-on-crime or virtuous as a politician or police officer, you arrest the evil temptress or the drug dealer who was corrupting the innocent citizens. However, this only increases the demand, which raises the price. People who wouldn’t become prostitutes or drug dealers for $1000 might do it for $200. However, if you arrest the johns and drug buyers, then you decrease the demand and make more of an impact.
Same idea. If abortion were illegal, then people would arrest the “evil” doctors to make it look like they were tough on abortion, but the non-hypocritical, actually-lowers-the-abortion-rate thing to do would be to arrest the women.
Or you could just keep abortion legal and put the money you were going to spend on court cases and prisons into access to contraception and medically accurate sex ed in schools. That would bring the abortion rate down too.

Maybe we should go the other way. If a woman can demonstrate that the fetus she aborted would have become Republican, we provide a reward.
