Just got notice from Social Security that, thanks to Obama Care, I now have to pay an additional sum for drug coverage. Not to the insurer providing the coverage, no, the sum will now be taken directly from my Social Security. Where that money goes I have no idea, because I still have to pay the insurer for the drug coverage, so I get to pay twice. That’s because my income (and they include the entire Social Security I receive, which is already taxed to the hilt) is more than $85,001. (That’s not mentioning the additional sum that is assessed against me, a non-house, non-pension, non-IRA, non-401k owner, for my Medicare Part B coverage, for the same reasoning. I believe that theft was passed by Congress in 2007.) Look at me, I’m rich and didn’t even know it. I guess I could stop working entirely and then live in luxury on Social Security alone. Ha.
I’ve heard there is already massive confusion about Obama Care’s taking this additional sum for drug coverage. Nobody knows where it’s going or who is supposed to get it!
Call your congress person and ask.
I’m sure there’s got to be something Obama has touched since assuming the prezidency that he hasn’t completely f*cked up, but I sure can’t think of one right now.
Tick, tick, tick. Now let’s see. Half the country will need a level of subsidy to meet inflated private premiums. Insurers want cash up front. Sooner or later an appropriation vote is comin’. Both sides have known this all along. Cynical thought for the day: maybe Obama needs chained CPI as a legacy builder because he already knows the ACA is toast.
What a load of crap. So called progressives throwing in the towel before ACA is even implanted. Susie, you’ve been demanding a federal role in health care as long as I’ve been reading this site. Sure, single payer would be great. It would also be politically impossible. Obamacare may not be close to my ideal, but I recognize it for what it is – the best start we could possibly have gotten.
If the left continues fighting for it eventually a better system may take shape. If the left abandons it and lets it go away, returning us to the status quo, how long will it be before it again becomes illegal to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions? Before every American is guaranteed access to health care? How many more decades will we have to wait?
I am fucking sick to death of visiting my poor friends in third-world quality hospitals in Baltimore where they get a Band-Aid and some aspirin and are discharged as quickly as possible. Last month I spent every free moment for a week visiting a friend who had tried to hang herself due to years of serious psychological problems she was too poor to get help with. She was under sedation the bulk of the time for fear of a heart attack if they brought her to too quickly. I’m sure she’ll be delighted to hear how concerned you all are for her health – so concerned that you’d rather she not get coverage now in the hopes that somewhere down the line – 10, 20, 30 years from now, she’ll get better coverage. Of course a suicidal substance abuser may not make it that long, but somebody has to pay for your allegiance to the ideal….
I’d rather read rightwing critiques of Obamacare. At least conservatives have the decency to not pretend they care about access for all. Their brutal honesty stands in stark contrast to your pissing and moaning about it not being good enough to meet your exalted standards.
Nothing like letting the ideal be the enemy of the good. I’ll be sure to spread the glorious news through the wards the next time I’m visiting someone getting the “no health insurance” treatment.
One last point: your source for your anti-Obamacare posting? The Wall Street Journal. Gee, I’m shocked to see the mouthpiece of our ruling elites come down against Obamacare; I would have thought they’d be for it.
Let’s see. Bob thinks that if the left “continues fighting for it” then a better system “may” take shape but Bob also thinks that the left should watch what they say because otherwise they are objectively cheerleading for the euthanizing of mental patients. I don’t think the motto “Fight but keep your mouth shut” is going to be a winner.
I’m afraid Bob lost me when he ascribed the qualities of “decency” and “brutal honesty” to the political faction that has, in fact, cheered for the Darwinian death of the uninsured at Republican Presidential debates.
These shrieking Obots are becoming increasingly tiresome. They got their Pony; he’s in the White House and they won’t be happy until everyone else agrees that this is the best of all possible worlds. Fuck the whiny bitch Susie.
I never said “watch what you say” but I guess when you don’t really have a counter argument more advanced than the routine and hackneyed slander of anyone who happens to think Obama did one halfway decent thing as an “Obot” that’s to be expected.
“…otherwise they are objectively cheerleading for the euthanizing of mental patients.” Not even close to what I wrote. I pointed out that if you succeed in derailing the ACA we return to the status quo. That means people like the woman I’m referring to lose what they would have gained. When will they next have a shot at coverage? What’s your plan? What do have for her? When will she get coverage if you keep her from getting it this time around?
““Fight but keep your mouth shut” is going to be a winner.” I didn’t write anything that in any way could be twisted into that statement. If you want to engage in a dialogue, fine, but read carefully and actually respond to the words I actually wrote.
“…when he ascribed the qualities of “decency” and “brutal honesty” to the political faction that has, in fact, cheered for the Darwinian death of the uninsured at…” What do you read at, a third grade level? I love how you twisted that into a claim of my supporting the right – agreeing that they are on the right side of this, which is a fine argument and all but unfortunately it is the exact OPPOSITE of what I wrote. I pretty obviously hate the position the right takes, and didn’t ascribe “decency” to their position. I said at least they were honest enough to come out and admit they were screwing the poor. All I see on this page is a handful of “progressives” fighting to deny coverage to the poor under the guise of demanding some ideal system. That we’ve been fighting for universal coverage since FDR should be something of a hint to you that the ACA is about the maximum that is politically feasible. Go ahead and snuff it out but please understand why you will be despised by people who really do give a shit about getting routine coverage for all Americans for the first time in our nation’s history.
“These shrieking Obots are becoming increasingly tiresome. They got their Pony; he’s in the White House and they won’t be happy until everyone else agrees that this is the best of all possible worlds.” I don’t need to twist your writing, all I need do to discredit you is quote from you. Do you think those two sentences insightful? Do you know anything about me? Obviously not – I am anything but a fan of Obama’s. But dealing in cliché and straw men arguments seems to be all you’ve got.
“Fuck the whiny bitch Susie.” Without question, the single most coherent sentence you managed to scribble.
For all of you: what is your plan? Once you’ve succeeded in slaying the Obama-dragon what next? How do we get from the status quo of 2008 to universal coverage? And remember, if the phrase “single-payer” appears in your answer you know less about the American political system than Rush Limbaugh. [Note to Sephronius: That DOESN’T mean I think Rush Limbaugh knows a lot about politics so please find some other way to completely mischaracterize what I’ve written.]
i gotta agree with bob on this one. the ACA is a big sop to the insurance industry, but it will improve things over what we had in 2008, so i’m all for it.
Here are some of the impending problems: The sequester and the proposed sequester deals all cut back the funding for the premium subsidies. Which mean people won’t be able to afford it, so I don’t really see what good it will do under those circumstances.
And then there’s the preexisting condition pool. Turns out they’re running out of money and shutting in down in several states.
