Yes, we’re really into beer in Philly – not me, but everyone else. Between this and coffee, I feel like I’m from another country when people start talking about “hops” and “French press.” Whatever. Just give me a decent cup of tea! About half the time, they bring a slice of lemon on the rim of the cup even though I requested it with cream.
“Just take the lemon off,” one waitress advised when I pointed it out. Gee, I’d never have thought of that!
“You have lemon oil in the tea now,” I told her. “It will curdle the cream. Can I get another cup, please?” Eye roll.
Don’t fuck with my tea, bitch.

Now, now, Suze, don’t blow a gasket! Hey, “when in Rome”, ya’ know…
Beer – all of those beers. OMG – they even have fruit beers now. It’s a City of microbrews! They even have their own menus.
I have to repeat what I asked for all the time. Young kids especially don’t want to be bothered with listening. (This is not to say there aren’t plenty of professional and thoughtful servers out there…)
Plus, for some reason, I swear the tea in England and Ireland just produces a better cuppa. I tried to buy those teas here, and, again for reasons unknown, they didn’t taste the same to me as when I drank them in England.
An Aussie here in NJ told me she had to hunt all over or have her relatives send her proper teas.
To get a good, hearty brew it seems to get bitter here, but in England was more “full bodied” to me.
Ah yes. The old lemon on the side of the cup thing. I’ve had that happen so many times that when the vitality is weak and the spirits low sometimes I just give up and pour cream in and hope for the best. Usually it only curdles it a little bit. 🙁
