  1. The Republican created Homeland Security Department costs us taxpayers $5 billion dollars a month to operate. Everybody please take off your shoes before reading any further. The Republican led government shutdown just cost us taxpayers $21 billion dollars. It costs us $10 billion dollars a month to keep our troops fighting in the Republican war in Afghanistan. It costs us $15 million dollars a month to keep Gitmo prison open because the Republicans won’t allow us to shut it down. It costs us taxpayers $62 billion dollars a month to fund a Pentagon that the Republicans claim is underfunded. Etc. Clearly it’s far to expensive to keep electing Republicans to office.

  2. I have never understood why foreigners come here, even before 9/11. Just coming back from vanilla European countries and being treated like a drug smuggler (I am male and used to be young) made/makes me hesitant to go abroad again. It is just such an ugly hassle at the end of a trip abroad (and end of vacation is always a bummer). I don’t even like flying within the US anymore. I can’t imagine being a post 9/11 foreigner and spending all sorts of money on tickets and reservations and potentially wasted vacation time, and losing it all on the whim of some immigration and/or customs assholes (and they are always assholes about it, even to their fellow citizens and government employees). If we are going to do this shit to people, we should at least make them get visas so they’ll know ahead of time if they will be barred from entry. Of course that would result in us having to get visas to go to Europe, making that even more of a hassle (on the plus side, there would be fewer ugly Americans in Europe, and you might actually feel like you are in a foreign country again, and not just a theme par, for richer Americans). Having a stamp from Turkey (our *ally*) will get you in trouble. We should just state up front that if you have ever visited certain suspect countries, you should get a visa before buying your plane tickets.

But let’s not put all the blame on the Rs for Homeland Security. As I recall (perhaps incorrectly) it had a whole lot of support from the Ds and the ones making the most noise about preventing its creation at the time was the rightwingers (broken clock being right once a day). Actually, I sort of remember Bush not being very eager to create it (which made me see it somewhat favorably) and Lieberman being a huge supporter of it (which made me see it very unfavorably, Lieberman being the most despicable pol ever, in my book).
