This is an extremely complicated matter involving NATO missile deployments, attitudes left over from the Cold War, Neo-liberal dogma, and miscalculations by both Russia (Putin) and the United States (Hillary and Obama).
The Caucuses have always been a flashpoint and are responsible for several major wars.
We shouldn’t forget that the Russian’s gifted the Crimea to Ukraine as a good will gesture years ago.
Unfortunately, US and NATO policy screwed the pooch on this whole deal as they did with Libya and Syria around the same time.
