A great man, James Earl Carter, has passed away.
When I was in elementary school in NW Atlanta, Govenor Carter voted at the school where I was a student. He would show up early to meet people at school. He would take time to talk with students. Jimmy Carter would always make a special trip to the school library to greet Mrs. Nessling, the librarian. A few of my friends’ parents worked for Carter on the campaign and some within the Georgia state government, Washington DC, and The Carter Center in Atlanta.
Jimmy Carter ran the Peachtree Road Race every year he could.
It would not be odd to see Governor Carter and Miss Lillian shopping around casually in Atlanta. Or enjoying a meal at one of the restaurants with vegetarian meals.
He was a great public servant and human being.
