Notice that the folks at Politifact chose a lie that isn’t just wrong, but “undermines an accurate narrative.” In this case, the accurate narrative is that Trump pressured the leader of a foreign ally to announce investigations that would undermine his political opponents. In other words, he is lying about his abuse of power, one of the articles of impeachment.

The confidential document, received by the IRS on Nov. 21, accuses church leaders of misleading members — and possibly breaching federal tax rules — by stockpiling their surplus donations instead of using them for charitable works. It also accuses church leaders of using the tax-exempt donations to prop up a pair of businesses.

But the real reason for getting the impeachment trial done fast is defensive: Republican want to dispense with their Constitutional responsibility before the public realizes there is a second Russia-focused federal criminal investigation underway and that Trump, once again, is at the center of it.
