The criminalization of dissent

I was rather publicly vocal about the illegal war in Iraq before we started shock and awe, and I’m sure it was just a coincidence that, for another two years or so, there was an obvious wiretap on my phone. (I mean, even my mother could hear it).

And that’s the kind of thing we’re still looking at in our country.

Did you know Three Cups of Tea was one of the suspicious organizations listed as reasons for the recent FBI raids in Minnesota and Portland? Yes, under the most recent legal distortion of the Patriot Act, contributing to human rights organizations can be construed as “material support for terrorism.”

It took a constitutional law professor to put a thin veneer of respectability to this madness.

  1. Your title is very interesting…

    “THE CRIMINALIZATION OF DISSENT”…..

As opposed to the demonization (or, if you will) the “trollization” of dissent…

Logically, you cannot castigate one side for the action, if ya’all indulge in the action yourselves…

    I’m just sayin’……

  2. Please explain, Michale…what do you mean?

Power of the state to arrest is surely more potent than any blogger or commenter’s ability to “demonize” or name as a troll some other commenter. Many degrees of difference.

    Think about it.

  3. More importantly, what the hell is wrong with Obama and Eric Holder?????

They’re seeing “enemies of the state” just about anywhere. When will the upstart DFH bloggers come more fully under this kind of attention from the Feds?

Will Obama have “enemies lists,” a la Nixon? He sure does have at least one assassination list we know of.

  4. And we know he hates whistleblowers. Which is what some lefty bloggers and commenters are doing on him and his administration.

  5. Jawbone,

While there is, of course, a difference in severity, the concept behind it is the same..

    Stifling dissent..

They’re seeing “enemies of the state” just about anywhere. When will the upstart DFH bloggers come more fully under this kind of attention from the Feds?

Has the possibility occurred to you that there really ARE enemies of the state around???

And we know he hates whistleblowers. Which is what some lefty bloggers and commenters are doing on him and his administration.

    Can’t argue with this…

  6. there’s a big difference between throwing someone you don’t like out of your party, or telling some stupid ass troll to shut the fuck up, and the government spying on you. what kind of fucking idiot doesn’t see this difference?

  7. somegirl,

there’s a big difference between throwing someone you don’t like out of your party, or telling some stupid ass troll to shut the fuck up, and the government spying on you. what kind of fucking idiot doesn’t see this difference?

As I have already pointed out, there is a difference in magnitude..

But, if ya’all are correct as to the intent of the FBI in targeting these groups, then the intent is the same.

In other words, ya’all and the FBI have the same answer to the same problem..

Ya’all don’t like dissent so ya’all do your utmost to stifle that dissent.

    Just like the FBI…

Again, this assumes that ya’all are correct in your assumptions as to the FBI’s motives.

My point is, people in glass houses should take care as to the stones that they want to toss…

  8. it’s not a difference in magnitude, it’s different conceptually.

but why am i even reading anything written by someone who is too stupid to spell y’all correctly.

  9. somegirl,

it’s not a difference in magnitude, it’s different conceptually.

    Explain.

I assume by “conceptually” you mean that the motivations are different.

    How so??

but why am i even reading anything written by someone who is too stupid to spell y’all correctly.

Thank you for your concession that you have no logical or rational response and must therefore resort to immature personal attacks and blatant Spelling Lames.

Your concession of my intellectual superiority is appreciated, albeit irrelevant.. 😀
