Seems to me they’re missing a rather prominent player:

In a Monday editorial titled “Prosecute Torturers and Their Bosses,” The New York Times called on the U.S. Department of Justice to launch an investigation of former Vice President Dick Cheney and several other Bush administration officials for actions they took to counter terrorism and root out terrorists, post Sept. 11, 2001.

The press for a federal query came in response to the Senate’s Democratic-fueled analysis on the administration’s response to terrorism — the so-called torture report.

“[This] report erases any lingering doubt about their depravity and illegality: In addition to new revelations of sadistic tactics like ‘rectal feeding,’ scores of detainees were waterboarded, hung by their wrists, confined in coffins, sleep-deprived, threatened with death or brutally beaten,” The New York Times opined. “These are, simply, crimes. They are prohibited by federal law.”

As such, the Justice Department should launch a full investigation of the key players, The New York Times said.

“The question everyone will want answered, of course, is: Who should be held accountable? … Any credible investigation should include former Vice President Dick Cheney; Mr. Cheney’s chief of staff, David Addington; former CIA Director George Tenet; and John Yoo and Jay Bybee, the office of legal counsel lawyers who drafted what became known as the torture memos,” The New York Times wrote.

North Korean internet outages

Looks like Kim Jong-Un won’t be playing any multi-user games for a while:

North Korea’s Internet connection with the world has been hit by a series of outages in the last 24 hours, according to a researcher.

Problems began on Monday morning, local time in Korea, when the handful of websites hosted on servers in Pyongyang became unresponsive. Over several hours, connectivity was spotty with connections sometimes succeeding but sometimes not.

“I haven’t seen such a steady beat of routing instability and outages in [North Korean Internet space] before,” said Doug Madory, director of Internet analysis at Dyn Research. “Usually there are isolated blips, not continuous connectivity problems. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are absorbing some sort of attack presently.”

The news has led to speculation that it might be the result of a promised but unspecified response by the U.S. to an attack against Sony Pictures, but it’s impossible to determine the cause from the network problems.

Marriage upheld in Florida

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday declined to extend a stay sought by Florida officials defending the state’s ban on same-sex marriages, allowing gay marriages to proceed in Florida next month.

Weddings would be allowed to start on Jan. 6 under an order by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta earlier this month.

Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented from the Supreme Court’s decision.

The high court’s order would make gay marriage legal in 36 U.S. states, including Florida.

In the past year, gay marriage advocates have largely prevailed in court rulings but a Cincinnati-based federal appeals court in November became the first to uphold gay marriage bans.
